Save cash & spread the cost of your new bike
Our new bikes are eligible for the Cycle to Work scheme (also know as the Bike to Work scheme). Best of all, when you buy a new bike via An Mheitheal Rothar, you will be helping to support our valuable community work, such as our DIY workshops where anyone can learn to fix their own bike.
What is Cycle to Work?
The Cycle to Work scheme allows your participating employer to purchase a bike and equipment valued at up to €1250, or €1500 for an e-bike from your pre-tax salary. You then pay your employer back over 12 months, saving tax and spreading the cost out over a year. You can buy a new bike under the scheme every four years.
Am I eligible?
Anyone who is a PAYE employee in Ireland with a participating employer is eligible. Many of Galway’s big employers have signed up, including University of Galway, the HSE, Department of Education, and many others. Ask your employer’s HR department if they are part of the scheme.
What is covered?
Any of the items below, provided they are bought new:
- New bikes and tricycles
- New electric bikes (electrically-assisted bikes that require some effort to propel)
- Cycle helmets
- Bells and horns
- Lights (including dynamo packs)
- Mudguards and skirt guards
- Cycle clips
- Panniers, luggage carriers and straps
- Locks and chains
- Puncture repair kits and cycle tool kits
- Reflective clothing
- Bike reflectors
What are the steps?
If you’re eligible, come in to the shop & choose the bike and equipment that best works for your commute. You will need to sign a written agreement that the bike is for your use and will be used for your commute. Your employer will then pay (Note: you cannot be reimbursed if you pay yourself, your employer must pay directly). Once payment is received, you can pick up your bike and away you go!
Your employer will set up a payroll deduction over 12 months to pay back the cost. These payments will include tax, PRSI & USC, meaning that if you are in a high tax bracket you could save up to 42% off the sticker price of the bike.
